  • New Faculty in 2008
  • New faculty members join Mathematics department The Mathematics department is pleased to introduce several new faculty members this year: Joel Bellaiche (Assistant Professor) R. Inanc Baykur (Lecturer), and Lior Fishman (Lecturer). We also welcome visiting scholar Natasha Macura.

Joel Bellaiche joins the department as an assistant professor. He studies number theory, with a strong interest in algebraic geometry and in harmonic analysis. Most of his recent research lies at the intersection of two subfields : Galois representations and automorphic representations. Joel received his PhD in 2002 from the University of Orsay (Paris Sud XI). Prior to coming to Brandeis, Joel was a Ritt Assistant Professor at Columbia University.

Inanc Baykur received his PhD from Michigan State University in 2007, and spent one year as a post-doctoral visitor at Columbia University. His interests lie in low dimensional topology, including the study of smooth 4-manifolds, symplectic and contact topology.

Lior Fishman comes to Brandeis from Ben Gurion University, where he received his PhD in 2008. His main area of research is in the realm of Diophantine approximation, in particular the Hausdorff dimension of the intersection of certain Diophantine sets.

Natasha Macura is visiting for the fall 2008 semester, from Trinity University. Her interests lie in geometric group theory.

  • Hsin-Hong Lai awarded the first 2008 Jerome Levine Prize.
  • The prize is given annually in memory of Jerome Levine, to a graduate student finishing with an outstanding PhD thesis.

  • Brandeis Mathematics Department awarded GAANN grant.
  • The Math Department has been awarded a 3-year GAANN grant (Graduate Assistantships in Areas of National Need) from the Department of Education. The grant, grant totalling $752,796, will fund fellowships for eligible graduate students in our department.

  • Dawn Nelson and Nate Stambaugh win 2007-08 graduate teaching prize.
  • The prize is given annually to a graduate student (or two, in case of a tie) in recognition of excellence in teaching.
