| Description: | The Eisenbud Lecture Series is funded by a generous bequest to Brandeis University from Leonard and Ruth-Jean Eisenbud. The lecture series will be given annually at Brandeis by a distinguished mathematician or physicist. |

| Description: | There will be a memorial service in honor of Professor Teruhisa Matsusaka, who passed away on March 4, 2006. Professor Matsusaka was a member of the Brandeis Mathematics Department from 1961, until his retirement in 1994 and was the department chairman from 1984-1986. His research in Algebraic Geometry was well-known throughout the international mathematical community, and his students have also gone on to make significant contributions to the field. |

| Description: | Ever wonder how websites such as eBay and PayPal keep your financial information private? Curious about why your CD player can still play CDs with small scratches? Cryptology and coding theory hold the keys to these secrets!
Profs. Gordon Prichett and Sarah Spence will be teaching an introductory cryptology and coding theory course next fall at Wellesley and are coming to Brandeis to present some basic ideas used in these fascinating areas. So everybody come up to the math lounge on Monday, March 7 at 4pm for a great talk and free food! |

| Description: | Professor Mazur's research focuses on number theory, automorphic forms, and related issues in algebraic geometry. His book Imagining Numbers (particularly the square root of minus fifteen), "invites lovers of poetry to make a leap into mathematics through discussions of the role of the imagination and imagery in both poetry and mathematics." This lunch will be an open, informal opportunity for discussion with Professor Mazur. Students and faculty are encouraged to attend. |

| Description: | The fall picnic is a chance for the math department to get together and have some fun. We will barbecue, play frisbee, soccer, etc. The department will supply drinks, burgers (meat and veggie), hot dogs, and rolls.
