The Summer Teaching Rules

The Hallowed Rules handed down from antiquity (=the first graduate council, from time before history) to decide who gets to teach are delineated below:

  • Eligibility   Everyone who has passed the apprenticeship program at Brandeis is technically considered eligible. In practice - since the program happens after the summer school decisions - this means someone who passed the program last year, and consequently has already taught at Brandeis.
  • Priority   Everyone who has taught x times in summer gets priority over everyone who has taught more than x times. After this, it follows seniority.
Obscurities:

  • The Last Shot Rule   A person who would have his/her last chance to teach (because they are leaving Brandeis after the summer in question), and who has not taught Summer School before, will be given priority over someone who would be around later.
  • "Screwing Bonus" Someone who got assigned to teach one summer, but could not because of insufficient enrollment would get a priority next year.
  • The Last Resort among people of equal priority will be a toss.
  • In The Event of Disagreement about application of the rules or anything else, the graduate council will first try to resolve the issue by talking.  If that fails, refer it to the department for a final decision.
